About the tour:
Bastin Vrancken (in-country tour guide), Alan Powell (tour/course co-leader), and I designate the budget and itinerary. Typically a sport-centric organization, BIP's owner/founder Tim Kelly has worked with Bastin, Alan and I to accommodate academically-focused tours.

About Bastin:
Bastin has been residing in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua since 2011, during which time he founded Manos Unidas, a non-profit organization which exclusively employs young adults with special needs from the SJSD community. He directs relocation and exposure tours in Costa Rica and Nicaragua through Bring It Promotions, LLC.

About Alan:

Alan Powell has been leading NGO building in Mexico and Central America since 1996. He has worked with Discovery Service Projects, a non-denominational Christian non-profit that has been building community buildings, hospitals, and reconstructing homes from hurricane damage.

In 2003, Alan Powell and his wife, Connie Coleman, spent two weeks in Rivas, Nicaragua re-building a community hospital. They built a women's center and re-stocked the hospital with surplus supplies from hospitals within the U.S. The project was sponsored by the Norwegian Aid Society.

In 2006, Coleman and Powell took an FS course to Merida, Mexico to build homes destroyed by Hurricane Mitch. In 2009 Coleman/Powell took another FSC and graduate-level Public Health class to La Union, Honduras partnering with International Aid, Rotary and the Honduran government to install clean water and composting septic systems in the 57 poorest villages in northern Honduras where the death rate for children under five years old was over 50%.

In 2011, 2012, and 2013, Powell led a Preview class to Central Mexico where they worked with communities of women whose husbands were working in the United States. From 2011-2017, Alan Powell has served on the Board of Directors of Discovery Service Projects planning and executing projects in Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Haiti.
